Piece together a little bit of history with this century-old puzzle from Parker Brothers. It's a challenging and beautiful way to pass the time, especially for puzzle lovers!
I have put many of these Pastime puzzles together. I have never seen a more intricately cut, complicated puzzle, I am so impressed by the skill level of the "Pastime Girl" who cut this one by hand!
The optional handmade wood tray is ideal for completing these Pastime Puzzles, keeping the pieces contained while putting it together and allowing you to move the tray from room to room as you complete it. The puzzle can be displayed in the tray, flat or tilted at an angle against a wall.
*PLEASE NOTE: If choosing puzzle plus tray, please allow 2 weeks build time.
Puzzle History:
Parker Brothers released the Pastime Puzzles in 1908 and by early 1909. they were producing 15,000 per week. The skill behind these gorgeous 3-ply wood puzzles are from the "Pastime Girls" who were required to cut 1,400 pieces per day. Their amazing craftmanship is shown in each hand cut puzzle, including the patented Figurals (figures, shapes, letters, etc) within the puzzle. Each puzzle was to have 12 Figurals per hundred pieces. The puzzles remained very popular, played by Presidents, Czars and the Royal Family, until the early 1930s. The last Pastime Puzzles were manufactured until the 1950s.
Puzzle Details:
- Finished size is approximately 12" x 16".
- This is a beautiful pastoral scene. The facing of the puzzle is in great condition considering it's over 100 years old. This was very difficult!
- This is a 266 piece puzzle with one missing piece from the top. I counted 38 Figurals. 4 pieces have knobs missing. The large circle piece has several marks or dents. There are a few worn images, as well.
- The box is sturdy and in tact , but has wear on the edges with some separation. The owner wrote their initials on the lid, the box label and a slight remnant of their full signature is on the bottom of the box. There is a photograph of the finished puzzle and an old note about the 1 piece missing.
- The optional handmade puzzle tray is made of pine and maple plywood that is stained with 2 coats of polyurethane. Bumpers are added to the back to protect surfaces. Tray measurement will be approximately 14" x 18".
Puzzles contain small pieces and are not intended for children under the age of 4.
